Camillo Golgi was an Italian biologist and pathologist whose work on the central nervous system earned him a share of the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, awarded jointly with Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Born in 1843 in the village of Corteno (later renamed Corteno Golgi in his honor), he studied medicine at the University of Pavia under Cesare Lombroso, earning his degree in 1865. After an internship at San Matteo Hospital and service as a civil physician and assistant surgeon, he returned to Pavia in 1867 to pursue further study under Lombroso, writing a thesis on the causes of mental disorders. Influenced by pathologist Giulio Bizzozero, Golgi shifted his focus to experimental medicine and histology of the nervous system. Financial constraints led him to become Chief Medical Officer at the Hospital of the Chronically Ill in Abbiategrasso in 1872, where he set up a simple laboratory in a converted kitchen. There, in 1873, he developed the black reaction, a staining technique using potassium dichromate and silver nitrate that randomly stained entire neurons black against a yellow background, making their structure visible for the first time. This method, now called Golgi’s stain, revolutionized neuroscience. He later returned to the University of Pavia as a professor of histology and general pathology, serving twice as rector. Several anatomical features bear his name, including the Golgi apparatus, the Golgi tendon organ, and the Golgi tendon reflex. Golgi died in 1926.
