Denis Mukwege

Congolese doctor and Nobel laureate treating wartime rape survivors.

Denis Mukwege (born 1 March 1955) is a Congolese humanitarian, gynecologist, and Pentecostal pastor. He is the founder of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he specializes in treating women who have survived rape. In 2018, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nadia Murad for their work to end sexual violence as a weapon of war. Mukwege has treated thousands of women raped during the Second Congo War, sometimes performing up to ten operations daily in seventeen-hour shifts, and is considered a leading expert in repairing rape injuries. He received the Right Livelihood Award in 2013 for his work healing survivors and speaking out about the root causes of wartime sexual violence.

Born in the Belgian Congo, Mukwege is the third of nine children of a Pentecostal minister. He nearly died at birth but was saved by a Swedish missionary midwife. After seeing women suffer complications during childbirth without specialist care, he studied medicine at the University of Burundi, graduating in 1983. He initially worked as a pediatrician but shifted to gynecology and obstetrics after witnessing women with obstetric fistulas and genital lesions. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Angers, France, in 1989, with his education largely funded by the Swedish Pentecostal mission. In 2015, he received a PhD from the Université libre de Bruxelles for his thesis on traumatic fistulas in eastern DRC.

After returning from France, Mukwege worked at Lemera Hospital until it was attacked during the First Congo War, killing patients and colleagues. He fled to Bukavu and founded Panzi Hospital in 1999, financed mainly by Swedish Christian aid organizations. The hospital has treated over 82,000 patients with complex gynecological trauma, about 60 percent from sexual violence used as a weapon of war. In 2012, Mukwege gave a speech at the United Nations condemning mass rape in the DRC and criticizing the government and other countries for failing to stop the violence. His advocacy has led to death threats on social media from the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda, particularly after he called for perpetrators named in a UN report to face an international tribunal. An assassination attempt in 2012 forced him and his family to leave the country temporarily. In October 2023, he announced his candidacy for president in the DRC general election, ultimately placing sixth with 39,639 votes.

Lore & Background

Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist and Pentecostal pastor who founded Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he treats women who have been raped. He was born in Belgian Congo, the third of nine children of a Pentecostal minister and his wife; a Swedish missionary midwife saved his life at birth after an infection nearly killed him. After earning a medical degree from the University of Burundi, he worked as a pediatrician but shifted to gynecology after witnessing childbirth complications. He obtained a master’s degree and completed his residency at the University of Angers, France, in 1989, later earning a PhD from the Université libre de Bruxelles for his thesis on traumatic fistulas. Mukwege has performed up to ten operations daily during 17-hour workdays, treating thousands of women who were victims of rape used as a weapon of war since the Second Congo War. He is considered a leading expert in repairing rape injuries. His work has drawn death threats and a 2012 assassination attempt, forcing him and his family to flee temporarily. In 2018, he and Nadia Murad jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end sexual violence as a weapon of war. He announced his candidacy for president in the 2023 Democratic Republic of the Congo election, finishing sixth.

Reader's Guide

Denis Mukwege’s work is defined by his surgical and holistic care for women subjected to sexual violence as a weapon of war, a practice he developed after observing that armed groups in the late 1990s deliberately inflicted genital damage. At Panzi Hospital, which he founded in 1999, he has treated tens of thousands of patients with complex gynecological trauma, performing up to ten operations daily during seventeen-hour shifts. His expertise in repairing rape injuries has been described as likely the world’s leading. The hospital’s approach integrates medical treatment with legal assistance, psychosocial support, and socioeconomic programs, reflecting Mukwege’s belief in treating the whole person. Beyond clinical work, he has become a prominent advocate for justice, condemning the Congolese government and other nations for failing to stop the use of rape as a strategy of war. His 2012 United Nations speech highlighted the scale of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which the UN has declared more prevalent there than anywhere else. This advocacy has brought death threats from sources in the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda, especially after he called for perpetrators named in a decade-old UN report to face an international tribunal. A 2012 assassination attempt forced him to flee the country, but he later returned to continue his work. His efforts earned him the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Nadia Murad, and the 2013 Right Livelihood Award. In 2023, he ran for president, finishing sixth with 39,639 votes.
